Thanks, that pretty much answers my question. Sorry, looked and searched, but did not find this thread (including Google advanced_search)
Sadly, I will not know if I need to change plans until day before the flight (it's complicated).

Like Adam said, if the fare has a change fee, any form of credit will forfeit that fee.
If it's been more than 24 hours, there's no benefit in cancelling until either:
a) You hit a schedule change or IRROPS that let you do it for free, or
b) 2 hours before departure, while you continue to hope for a)
Indeed, I have about three hours to decide to be within 24 hours of booking.
First flight is on UA, almost exactly one month out, so doubt there will be schedule change ......
It could be a gamble, because it's only a $200 ticket (US), and I am guessing that change fee would be $150
