Does AC have this policy as well, or do I have to cancel today as I am not sure I will be able to fly next month (due so a certain reason where I am in danger of things going south)..
You can either (a) cancel your flight and credit it to AC wallet - amount of the ticket less applicable change fees will be credited (see
this thread) or (b) cancel the flight and leave the credit attached to the ticket, in which case you will only have a year to use it and will need to call in to do so. Applicable change fees will be deducted when you re-book.
If your flight is a month out, might as well wait a couple weeks and see if AC happens to change or cancel your flight so you can get a proper refund rather than wallet credit.
