My Canadian friends who arrived in Cancun also 2 weeks ago say they were sent to humans unlike the last year when in Cancun Americans and Canadians were served by the machines just as Mexicans.
Arrived into MEX on May 10th, asked and was allowed to use the machines. US passengers can use them if they are arriving for tourism. Was better than the last time I used them a year+ ago. Software and camera ran smoothly, I was through in easily under a minute. Much better than the staffed line which I estimate was 20-30 minutes
I kept the slip, and later scanned the barcode, confirmed the details and downloaded the digital FMM - a PDF of the old forms we used to fill out before arrivals, and are no longer used at the staffed immigration desks. And which of course no-one at departures asked about or looked for.
