I believe that hypothesis came from a belief that if you didn't spend enough to earn at least 1 point on a stay, that the Accor system didn't automatically post the night credit. I don't know if that's true, since I don't think I've ever tested that. It's also possible that used to be a thing, but has since been fixed. Those Accor IT guys are always tinkering and breaking things, and maybe they occasionally fix something, too.
