Anyone stayed here recently? I am tossing up here or Novotel les Halles but Novotel is at least $500 AUD more expensive ?!. Is the location any less seedier? Also, is taxi best way from/to CDG and how much should I expect to pay in an uber? I need to be in this vicinity as I am visiting friends in the Marais area. Looked at the SO/ hotel but 2km is just too far to walk.

No personal experience of staying at the MGallery, but is not in the same area as the Novotel (at least for a Parisian
).
If 2km is too far to walk, the MGallery and the Novotel won't be closer to Le Marais. But it all depends where you go in Le Marais.
By public transportation from CDG, the Novotel Les Halles is very easy to reach by train as the station is just below the hotel (although it's a huge station, the largest in Europe).
By Uber or taxi, keep in mind that the absolutely crazy mayor of Paris is at war with cars so she made it total madness to reach places like Les Halles by car. With taxi, it's a flat fare form CDG (around 55€ IIRC). By Uber, something around 40-45€.
