I have a lot of avios but couldn't utilize them very much so I am not sure AY miles would be useful in the end. For me, AA miles have been very useful but with the changes this year, I think my flights on IB, BA, AA will earn based on the ticket price, so I won't earn much with AA even with their elite bonus
Yeah, the problem with crediting to AA on these tickets, is that you have to very carefully plan to credit to AA and avoid AA, IB, and BA codes as much as possible. You never know with AAdvantage, they might end up crediting as distance, but I'd never rely on it anymore. If using the OW tool, then it almost definitely means a re-ticket and likely a $125 fee to get the codes changed over to JL, QR, AY, etc. to make them more palatable.
AS is a fine program, but is now distance based. It is nice in some spots, and not so nice in others. I'm pretty sure though it 's the entire journey vs. the Avios programs that will still charge you segment by segment. I'd say ideally if you're not going for AA, then I'd prefer status on a OW airline that gets free MCE on AA but also gets domestic lounge access. I personally don't fly a ton of US domestic that isn't part of an international ticket but it could be useful occasionally. But beggars can't always be choosers, and OWS / OWE with any airline is much better than OWR with AA.
