Given that you can rent a car cheaply for a day (under £20) in some parts of the world, and there is no requirement for your car hire to be anywhere associated with your flight, I would struggle to see any case where a cheap long haul trip wouldn’t earn enough Avios via BAH to offset the cost of the car hire.
