Is that really Boeing's fault though? Almost every 777 delivered 20 years ago had 9 seats across in economy. Today, pretty much every airline has converted to 10...
Assuming you're just referring to narrowbodies, yeah A320 is ~7 inches wider than a 737... we just have to pray evacuation requirements don't change lest airlines try to shove 7 across into an a320.
