Looks like PATH train and NJ Transit route 62 is the way to go. Saves money even before the EWR airtrain fare rose.
Out here in San Francisco, BART has a similar expensive surcharge for SFO and OAK stations. To avoid the surcharge, you could use a local bus from a nearby BART station.
