SFO Announces Five-Month Closure of Runway 28L in Early 2024 for Taxiway Improvement Project

New taxiways will make it easier, safer for aircraft to exit runways after landing

SAN FRANCISCO – December 18, 2023 – The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced plans for a taxiway improvement project which will allow aircraft to exit runways more easily and safely after landing. This project will require the closure of Runway 28 Left for five months in early 2024 to realign two taxiways, “Delta” and “Tango”, which aircraft use to exit from Runways 28 Left and 28 Right. Construction crews will remove existing taxiways and reconstruct Delta and Tango as separate, non-intersecting taxiways. The new configuration will improve safety and bring the layout of the taxiways up to the latest standards.

The five-month closure of Runway 28 Left is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, and is expected to reopen no later than Monday, July 1, 2024, in advance of the Independence Day weekend and peak summer travel season
