JAL to AA on the way back OK. But moot as need to process USA immigration & customs with all bags at port of entry.

Actually, the interlining on the way home is actually not entirely moot, since that would definitely shorten the time wasted a bit, not too much but a bit. But the whole thing about US gateway airports making you re-check bags…we need to stop doing this. Other country have not done this, and the world has not ended because of it.
