AA regularly will not charge the UK APD on an AA UK-USA ticket as long as AA can "see" the separate ticket that shows arrival in the UK less than 24 hours prior to the AA departure. Many examples given in this thread:

Whether UA will be as accommodating, I cannot say. But as AA demonstrates, it is certainly possible.​​​
