For people who don't really travel for work, aka for those who only travel for conferences, onsite meetings a few times a year, etc, while travelling in J even for short haul flights sounds ridiculous, the cost is nothing when the annual total comp is $500K+, and that's the pretty standard comp package for staff level engineers at tier 1 and tier 2 companies.
Everyone is opex focused these days, even "tier 1 and tier 2" SV companies.
And I've always argued when I have worked at smaller companies that the people who deserve leeway for better travel policies are frequent fliers. If you fly once a quarter for low stress events like conferences and on-site meetings then suck it up. Spend the $ on people who are flying all the time and will actually benefit from it.
