The US model effectively means that you pay more to the credit card company (in form of higher prices of whatever you're buying) to then get breadcrumbs back, which you can use on reward flights with one alliance. Exactly, I'd rather pay the processing fees than getting robbed further by the state. In the US you have a choice to live in a state without sales tax.
