There is no such monopoly. Both DL and B6 fly PHX-JFK; UA flies PHX-EWR. AA has interline agreements with DL and UA, and might still have one with B6. AA therefore has the ability to re-accommodate distressed passengers on other carriers for PHX-NYC; whether they will, in fact, do so in a particular case is another matter.

And DL even has Saturday-only PHX-LGA service now!
