I was specifically talking about special security checks to either get to the gate area (at airports with 'enclosed' gate areas) or just prior to boarding (for open gate areas) to check for liquids.
That's definitely a 'fly-to-US' thing, and likely still a remnant of the 2006 transatlantic aircraft plot.
