If they are trying to drive spending on the Reserve/Amex Platinum and deal with Sky Club crowding; cutting membership altogether makes sense; or at least significantly raising the price.

Just run various back of the envelope calculations on what 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 % cuts of the interchange on the Reserve looks like for Delta and you will understand.
I suspect that if they were going to eliminate purchasing of memberships altogether, they’d have already done it. They kept the purchasing of memberships for medallions for a reason.

As mentioned, there is a market segment (certain road warriors) that fly very often and yet will never have enough spend on their Amex to cross the $75k threshold, even if they tried. Collectively, because of frequent flying, this group consumes a lot of seats and ticket sales. Without a membership option, DL probably loses them as customers because they otherwise don’t have a path to getting unlimited lounge access. Therefore, I don’t see medallion lounge memberships going away.
