Remember "more room in coach" AA heard people like you saying "oh we want more room etc" So they delivered. They went with "more room in coach" Of course that meant they had to charge more because they had fewer seats. But it would work. The American public said "oh we want more room and will pay for it" And then it's time to pull out the credit card... Oh look Delta is $10 cheaper... we don't really really need more room! American quietly did away with the program.
"Your knees don't care who your hometown airline is" banner in ORD T3, I think at the escalators to baggage claim though I don't recall the exact location with certainty.
