Because AA is forcing people to use the narrow side on some flights. Just flew last weekend (without the bag) and all six legs forced narrow side.
They're not "forcing" it. They've made the bins larger so that standard bags fit that way, and four or five people can get a suitcase into the same space. It's better for all but if yours doesn't fit that way, then it lies down as before.
