Security often opens them up and pulls out the contents. Especially in Edmonton, where they did it every single time.
Your post brought back a memory. No problem carrying the tube onboard from France even in Y. Canada Customs was another matter entirely. Not raised upstairs (I was holding it) when talking to the agent. Downstairs at the door where you hand your card in, I was pulled over for questioning specifically about the tube and it’s contents.
