43 inch Poster Tube as carry on - Air Canada

Any one have experince in bringing 43 inch long poster tube (light and thin) into Air canada flight recently. I heard carry on policy is strictly enforced nowadays.

I am flying YYZ-YVR.

Do you have status or, are you flying business?

Ive done it in the past prior to the current situation. Did not have an issue. It was counted as 1 carryon. However, I have status and was flying business.

I feel like I've seen this a few times but not in the past year or so.

I have no experience with a poster tube, but AC's carry on guidance is inconsistent, e.g., it seems to specific maximum dimensions, but then lists examples of permitted items some of which obviously don't fit within those dimensions, e.g., a tennis racket is 6 inches longer than a standard carryon is high. I'd hope on the day common sense would prevail and they'd permit the poster tube as within the spirit of the rules, given that the rules are designed so people don't take more than their share of space, which you wouldn't.

I have brought map/blueprint tubes in J and Y multiple times in my army days. Not an issue at all. They either put them in the closet for me or I lay them horizontally at the back of the overhead.

Security often opens them up and pulls out the contents. Especially in Edmonton, where they did it every single time.

On aircraft where there is sufficient cupboard space, usually they will accommodate (space permitting). Gate agent usually checks with Crew. Check your aircraft type. B737 & A220 cupboard space is very limited.

Yes, but on these flights, I was easily able to just lay them in the overhead bin behind the other bags. On at least 20 flights nobody ever asked or batted an eye at it.

I have travelled to conferences with a poster tube multiple times and I have never been bothered.

That's around the same length as a Disney Star Wars lightsaber. Wasn't a problem at all last year. SNA - YVR - YEG, all on AC metal.

Your post brought back a memory. No problem carrying the tube onboard from France even in Y. Canada Customs was another matter entirely. Not raised upstairs (I was holding it) when talking to the agent. Downstairs at the door where you hand your card in, I was pulled over for questioning specifically about the tube and its contents.
