Security often opens them up and pulls out the contents. Especially in Edmonton, where they did it every single time.
On aircraft where there is sufficient cupboard space, usually they will accommodate (space permitting). Gate agent usually checks with Crew. Check your aircraft type. B737 & A220 cupboard space is very limited.
