The 777W is a much easier aircraft for airlines to integrate into their operations than the A380. Sales figures are pretty conclusive on that. Deliveries of 832 vs 251.

Air France never really wanted the A380, but ordered it for political reasons. The 77W was something Air France really wanted (IIRC, they were the launch customer for it).
