If you are a graduate of a U.S. college or university, have you checked to see whether your alma mater has car-rental contracts which alumni can use for leisure travel? I can usually get great rates from Avis, Budget, and Hertz on sedan rentals using my alma mater's leisure rate code. I do have an alumni email address with the alma mater's domain name, but I also bring a certified copy of my transcript along -- showing conferral of a degree -- when I rent, to prove my status as an alumnus if asked.

The rate codes which alumni can use tend to be limited to those from private colleges/universities.
