I want to challenge that. My read of the PDF is that flexible fares can clear 7 days in advance, and without status, you're not eligible on any other fare type. And I thought that had always been the case. So I'm curious where that 3 day/gate statement came from.
That is also my understanding, with the note that "flexible fares" here mean Latitude and PY Flexible, lest someone interpret it as including Economy Flex.
I do have a friend insisting they were able to eupgrade themselves at the gate with no status. I doubt their version of story and believe they may have some residual 25K status due to all the Covid shenanigans.
