my experience 2 weeks ago was that the automatic re booking was fairly quick (within 2 hours of cancellation notice) but the routing was not ideal - next day flight and long connection time. We would have effectively lost 2 days of the vacation i called in to AC and found an option for same day departure. YMMV. I think each case is specific as the rebooking has to take into account lots of inputs
