Getting back to Beijing flights and daily to Shanghai would be a good start and I suspect UA's focus. I would think Guangzhou would be a sensible candidate for flights, though I realize Hong Kong can serve as something of a gateway there.
Sadly, there's no point speculating about China flights as long as the bilateral remains frozen at 12 weekly frequencies per side. From what I have been able to acsertain, the stagnation has little to do with politics (unless you count protectionism as a subset of politics).
