On an aircraft with a satellite-based WiFi system, it may be possible to receive the SMS while still connected to the cell network, or one could turn off the WiFi for a moment to collect the 2FA e-mail from one's e-mail, then turn it back on to sign in.
I regularly use SMS on AC wifi. Airplane mode enabled, wifi enabled, and no issue with SMS.
But that doesn't help if you need SMS to actually get signed in.
I still haven't tried SMS on the free plan, but maybe I will tomorrow.
