Just to close the loop here: I ended up changing my travel dates and needed to do a multi-city trip on the new dates, so I booked a new ticket and refunded this one.

I got a full cash refund no problem whatsoever (other than Amex Platinum Travel online taking 50 minutes back and forth trying to call AF).
