To answer my own question, when i paid for PP to fly EWR-SFO we were only offered the bad standard economy headphones
Currently in PP EWR to Houston which i was able to select for free as economy plus. Every seat has the upgraded headphones

The back of the seat feels incredibly beat up and uneven. This would not have been fun on a 16 hour fight, which is the previous flight the plane did from Johannesburg
