You could book 20 B or J (still good seats!) and there's a small chance you might get a seat block due to this:

However, the WTP cabin is usually full, well certainly on most flights I have ever been on but as an Emerald as I understand it only another Emerald or BA Gold would be able to select a seat beside you. as Gold obviously trumps Silver. It may also be worth checking if you can upgrade using Avios, get a POUG or even ask re an AUP on the day?

It's also worth mentioning that there is always the small possibility of an aircraft change as there are quite a few 777 configurations so something to be aware of. Another possibility I was thinking of if you took a window seat at say 22 or 23 there's probably a higher chance of a seat block but as I said WTP is usually very popular.

Thanks, I am booking with miles on a day flight on a busy route and a busy holiday, but I am throwing my hat in the ring for a rare complimentary or operational upgrade as a non BA Emerald...

BA used to give random complimentary upgrades to non BA elites, is that still happening? I got one to PE the only time I flew BA economy...
