Thanks so much for that! I did read your post for explanation but am none the wiser (the fault lies with me not your explanation) - I will take encouragement from your calculation and live in hope that the taxes will work out lower than I expect!
I had intended to book through JAL as they are our first flight - would you have any idea (without going to the bother of working it out) if they would have similarly low taxes? They are one of the lowest for taxes I think.
Also, if I book through JAL can I credit the points earned to Qantas? I'm hoping to gain status with Qantas on that run in the hope that in 2025 we can book a 35K mile Qantas Oneworld Classic itinerary. ATM Qantas is appallingly bad to try to book anything through their call centres if you have no status.
