The American tourists are looking for experiences, particularly anything to do with wilderness and adventure. The South Island of NZ is prime for that.
Queenstown, served by ZQN as an airport, is the hot destination and must see spot for most of these tourists. Many other great or better places in the SI as well.
This SFO-CHC will sell well with people paying for premium cabins.
If you live in the SI and want to go to NA or points beyond, a direct flight from CHC to SFO thus avoiding a connection in AKL is awesome.
I don't really understand the SFO-CHC addition. Christchurch has a population of about 400,000 people, and although many regions of the South Island are popular with visitors (deservedly so!), Christchurch really isn't. Meanwhile, UA can connect passengers at AKL (or vice versa) to any of the 10 airports NZ serves on the South Island. Sure, there's a walk (or bus) from the international terminal to the domestic terminal at AKL, but it's short and flat!
If only the runway at ZQN was about three thousand feet longer . . .
