My understanding of Tier Qualifying Nights: there are some rates that don't qualify (e.g. some corporate convention rates, or MGM comp night rates). Straight points bookings will count. Not sure about Free Night certs - I've had the free ones from the Chase CC; hitting brand explorers, earned cat 1-4 and 1-7 ones all count. I've received a free night on us as a customer care / make-up recently - but I haven't used that one yet. I suspect that one probably won't count.

As for brands - I believe your assumption is that most brands who earn a Tier Night will count, but the rate is the one that matters.
