#601 on Amex USA 4 or 5 "Credit" Card Limit includes the 2 most common AmEx recon numbers. Also describes my successful recent experience with the 10 charge card limit which might be helpful for you.
(In post #171 above I confessed to inadvertently applying for a charge card while having 10 open charges cards, to answer some of my previous unanswered questions: Despite 8-10 calls to recon both before and closing some accounts, I was never able to speak with a recon agent/credit analyst (who could actually review and make a decision). I closed 3-4 accounts via one customer service call 2 days after application. Called the next day to discuss the application in review and possible 10 card limit and account closures, couldn’t talk to recon, discussed with 2 different customer service agents (within 1 hour) both of whom said “3 to 5 to 7 days, you’ll get an email”, several hours later received “congratulations” email. Thus, based on my experience and a few other reports here since, the 10 card limit does indeed seem to be carved in stone and can be overcome by closing an account (or accounts) and asking AmEx to reconsider.)
