I once tried my luck at Athens Airport, both with the check-in desk agent, and with the ticket office at the airport, and they both flat out refused to do anything, saying that they are unable to do anything about it. The check-in agent actually called the ticket office at the airport before refusing.
They ticket office agent (probably the one that the check-in agent spoke to) was especially annoyed that I wasted 5 seconds of their time to ask the question...
And then it cleared at the gate when the boarding pass was scanned.
Meaning, not being Gold at the time, I had lost lounge access & extra baggage allowance.
