It currently works almost exactly opposite, as GAs typically clear non-revs into best available Y seat, which means the prime E+ seats (exit row and bulkheads) almost always get filled first. Literally every time I've been in Y on UA the past year or so (thankfully not often), the GAs have put a non-rev next to me, leaving other middles empty.
Yep, if I know I'm going to be in Y, I've found that trying to have an empty middle is a complex game of weighing the inventory / seat map (figure out how many BE pax), the SBY list, and reverse psychologizing other pax and the GA. I would really appreciate not having to do so and instead being able to rest assured that status gave best chance of open middle. I know it's a pipe dream, alas!
