My partner was on PY ticket and 50K status. She was confirmed eupgrade. Today she was bumped, not to PY but to Y.... (the plane does have PY)
I'll bet my bottom dollar that there were other people on Y who were eupgraded or with lower status... but they were not bumped.
Was it an Aeroplan booking?
There have been reports that those seem to be prioritized for downgrades.
But there's absolutely no way in hell I'd accept a J to Y downgrade when I booked PY.
Half the reason I book PY (disclaimer this is a blog post that I wrote:

Even if everyone in J were paid J other than me, there's no way PY doesn't have someone with lower status who could be given a one-cabin downgrade to put me back in my ticketed cabin.
