My old company started its own delivery service business "because Amazon did it". After about two years, they laid everyone off. As it turns out, it didn't make sense because we didn't have Amazon volume. Amazon might deliver multiple packages on the same street. All of these gig delivery companies will do it for far cheaper. I imagine we will only see more of this. Of course, often times putting the onus on the consumer to pay tips. I think I tried ordering petfood from Petco, and they used DoorDash, which wanted a tip. Absolutely not.
The whole 'independent contractor' employees loophole is just a way to get exploited or for corners to be cut--no insurance, offloaded liability, etc. It's not really a sustainable business process since you're using up a resource in the process--people.
