Unlike the AAdvantage program, United's MileagePlus does not prevent you from flying West from BKK to the U.S. on a single award. Just search for BKK-IAD in Business Class at united.com, and you should find at least a few dates when you can book Ethiopian for 99K miles.
Yes, if you can find JL for BKK-TYO-U.S. with AAdvantage miles, that would be preferable -- and less costly. But if you cannot find that now, and are not prepared to wait for availability to open up, Ethiopian with MileagePlus miles is a decent alternative.
