And someone above mentioned security checks at gates. Those are a pill, to be sure, since there are usually no concession stands at that point. That's less because I want to buy something, and more in case of delays. IIRC, Jakarta CGK, AMS, SIN, and Kuala Lumpur KUL have done it that way, but I'm sure there were many others.

Also, I'm indifferent to airports being dated, but I have never liked low-ceilings in them. There's enough stress out there without needing to feel like you're in a doll house.
