What I have done in similar situations is to pay for a checked bag and then ask to bring my overweighed bag (correct size) onboard. I always was allowed to bring it onboard...
Hey there and sorry for "rewarming" this thread when I found this very useful reply.

Does anyone of you have any reliable information on how AirAsia actually handles the carry-on rules these days? I'm flying SUB-LOP tomorrow, booked an extra 2x 7kg, plus the Premium Flex tariff, which includes a 20kg checked back anyway (that I don't need and really don't want to check). Should/can I risk going to the gate even though the bag + backpack weigh >7kg each (actually like you did [MENTION=640904]Fyd[/MENTION]?)

Background: I have a lot of expensive technics with me and I want to avoid having to check it at all costs. If necessary, is there a possibility at the gate to pay again or even more for additional hand luggage or what is the procedure here?
