You, in fact, NEED to have the card with you. U.S. preclearance at Canadian airports is literally the only place I’ve ever been asked to produce my physical Global Entry card.
They won’t let you in the separate preclearance line without it, because they have no way of verifying your eligibility otherwise (it appears to be 3rd party contract workers guarding the line most times), so you may find yourself forced to go through the regular line if you’re not carrying it.

I’ve never had a long wait anywhere in Canada. I did have a multi-hour wait in Aruba for preclearance a few years ago, but Canada seems to be ok.
