One example I found is a MSP to BTV on Jan 18th. You can get DL & UA or UA & DL connecting flights in another days.

If I can get the same support, protected transfer, I would buy AA&DL connecting flights .

I also found BTV to TYO shows DL domestic flight to JFK and AA international flight JFK to NRT.
My educated guess is that those itineraries are ticketed by online travel agencies - not the airlines - with separate PNR's; those are considered to be self-connections.

Whether you will be able to check your luggage through to your destination or be protected in cases of irregular operations are questions for the individual airline forums.
