Your AA ticket might be easily changeable, but is there a later flight to LGA if you miss the 6pm? If there isn't, are you comfortable with the idea of spending a night at YUL?
If you have checked bags, forget about the 1h40min option. Without bags, you'd need the stars to align, which they probably won't - we're talking AC and YUL, after all.
