Agreed -- and don't forget, there may be other airlines (even Star Alliance ones) that get you business class for a lot cheaper, and sometimes without much inconvenience, if any. I am flying UA and NH in paid business to Indonesia next month as it was less than half the price of booking with Air Canada flights.
I have been ok with upgrades on AC in North America so far this year--hope that continues.
