What also might happen is the Nexus card won't be able to be used for Real ID because the printed date is expired, even if Nexus privileges are extended one year.
Not quite following. Whether you apply for a renewal 11 months or 1 day prior to expiration, you will get an identical new expiration date (current expiration + 5 years) when it is final approved. You only gain a year if you renew (aka new application) after expiration date (assumes processing is complete within a year but some >365 days datapoints being reported here).
The difference is if you renew prior to expiration, your NEXUS privileges remain active during the renewal process. If you "renew" after expiration, you have no NEXUS privileges while application is being processed. Effectively your max "savings" is $10 but you risk having no NEXUS privileges during the time it takes to process the new application which could be days or more than a year. So depending on your travel plans, that could effectively be no savings at all.
