The “pay with miles” mileage upgrade offers usually are horrible and require a crazy amount of miles. Do you have quite a few miles between the two of you? I would recommend calling Delta and asking them if there are any Mileage Upgrade Awards available for the flight. They are somewhat rare and many agents don’t even know what they are. When you call in, if you get any pushback, ask them if there are any OY fares available as that’s the fare required for D1 mileage upgrade awards. If you are currently in C+, I think it’s roughly a 65,000 mile one way upgrade award which is far better than the pay with miles option.
As rare as they are, I’ve been quite successful with them this year.
Mileage Upgrade Awards are no longer available in the Americas region (which includes South America). Further, they require at least a coach K fare or higher (or C+ with underlying K fare or higher if you purchase a C+ fare -- comp upgrades to C+ don't count).
