Likely an OPUP if coach was sold out. I've probably gotten a dozen of them in 40 years/2.5 MM of NW and DL flying. I've also gotten 3 of them on much less flying AF PE - but always CDG to Asia - never across the Atlantic on AF.
At the very end of PMNW, it was kind of the norm. NW was giving 'phantom' upgrades to Plats at the gate on international travel. About 10 minutes before boarding the gate agent would call you up and hand you a new boarding pass.
