The problem is that for most people on most days that is a viable connection and they should be able to book it. I don't know what their threshold is but AA flag short but legal connections as a suggestion that you should think about it. People on FT have ideas about sensible as opposed to allowed connections and there are discussions about it. In your case you would probably have had to choose the next day connection unless there is another airline you could have used and, as luck would have it, you found space. It is unfortunate that the slick connection didn't work but at least you could afford to pay for a hotel.
